HAIR FALL AND YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS

HAIR FALL AND HAIR GROWTH CYCLE

Our Natural Strand-by-Strand Hair Extension Technique supports your natural hair growth cycle through its three stages.

The TELOGON phase is the resting phase.  At any given time 10-15% your hair is in the Telogon phase.  Approximately 25-100 Telogon hairs are shed daily.  Hair fall after an individual hair extension strand has been applied lessons anchorage and support available to that hair extension strand.  To prevent premature pulling of Telogon hairs Hair extensions are applied in solid continuous rows evenly over the scalp area rather than in random sections to allow hairs to shed without placing excess tension on the remaining growing hairs. The additional support means your Hair Extension style lasts longer and does not deteriorate through shedding.  The ‘fallen hair’ is held within the extension bind and combed out during the gentle Natural Hair Extension removal process.

The ANAGEN phase is the growing phase. Once the Telogon hair has been shed (actual hair fall), the cells in the root of the hair begin to divide rapidly creating a new hair shaft.   During this phase the hair grows about 1 cm every 28 days. Scalp hair stays in this active phase of growth for 2-7 years. The amount of time the hair follicle stays in the anagen phase is genetically determined. Natural Hair Extensions are applied 1mm away from the scalp in the same direction as hair growth to prevent any disruption to your hair during this phase. Controlling the tension at the scalp prevents the hair extensions creating undue pressure on the hair follicles which can cause hairs to prematurely enter the telogen phase. At the end of the anagen phase an unknown signal causes the follicle to go into the catagen phase.

The CATOGEN phase is a short transition stage that occurs at the end of the anagen phase.  It signals the end of the active growth of a hair. This phase lasts for about 2–3 weeks while a club hair is formed at this point the hair enters the telegon phase.

NATURAL HAIR EXTENSIONS WORKING WITH YOUR NATURAL HAIR DENSITY

Hair density is the amount of hair strands on the head.  The average head has approximately 2,200 strands of hair per square inch, a total of approximately 100,00 hairs.  To achieve a natural Hair Extension style the extension hair attached mimics your own hair density so you don’t end up with an over full, false looking result.  This is also pivotal in preventing the onset of traction alopecia.

Your hair density differs in different areas of the head.  For example the hair density on your crown will differ from the hair density above your ears. The crown is the region that is most densely packed with hair follicles. In adults the sides and back of the scalp may have a hair density as low as 150/cm2. For the crown of the scalp pre-puberty, the density is 250-400 hairs/cm2.

Our  Strand by Strand Hair Extension service has been developed to compliment your natural hair growth cycle and hair fall to be safe for thin and fragile hair. The completely natural Hair Extension application technique is heat and chemical free meaning it is safe to use on even breaking and brittle hair.  Even on healthy hair it is imperative the dermal papilla is not pulled whist moving up or down the temporary lower follicle. The key to the success and inherent safety of the Natural Hair Extension technique is a fundamental understanding of the biology and natural growth process of your hair.

NATURAL HAIR EXTENSIONS PREVENTING TRACTION ALOPECIA

Traction Alopecia is a biphasic form of hair loss, initially the hair loss is temporary, hair growth occurs and the condition acts like a non-scarring form of alopecia.  Traction alopecia is caused my constant pulling of the hair and is commonly seen in Black women, mostly around the hairline, this type of hair loss is often associated with hair extensions. The reason hair loss is normally seen around the hairline is that this is a very sensitive area of the hair.  There are many muscles under the skin and when we make expressions they contract, if movement is restricted the fine hairs will be pulled, this is usually extremely painful and results in hair loss in this area.  Around the hairline the dermal papilla is very close to the scalp, hairline hairs have a much shorter lifespan so it is more easily damaged.  The pain is caused because hair that is still in the Anagen phase (hair attached to a blood supply and still growing) if this happens repeatedly the hair follicle will stop reproducing hair.  For this reason Natural hair extensions are not applied around the hairline and the nape of the neck.  When natural Extensions are applied much attention is paid to the tension and placement of the actual attachment.

The effect of the Natural Hair Extensions on your hair and scalp is the equivalent of wearing your hair in a relatively tight ponytail for 36 hours. After this there is no continued pressure or trauma on the hair or scalp so there is no risk of hair loss.  For traction alopecia to become potentially permanent, trauma must be inflicted continually over a period of 3 or more years.

“In reality, little damage is generally done to follicles as a result of pulling.  A hair shaft grows from the papilla, and as long as the papilla has not been seriously damaged or destroyed (e.g. burned / scarred), hair will continue to grow.  Some people mistakenly believe that when they pull the hair shaft with the bulb attached to the end, that they have pulled out the root.  This is not the root.  Since the papilla lies deep within the skin the chances of it being pulled out or damaged are very small.”
