A Contra-Indicator is a an indication that you are not suitable for  a hair extension service

Recent Pregnancy / Child birth /Thyroid irregularities

A client who is pregnant or has given birth in the last 6 months may experience excessive hair fall or be likely to suffer scalp irritations. An under active thyroid and an overactive thyroid can cause temporary hair loss

Weak/damaged hair at root level

Clients who have very weak or damaged hair in the first 4cms of growth will not be able to support an extensions style.

Clients who have had a perm / chemical straightening services in the last 28 days

Chemical services that alter the hair’s texture can affect the strength and natural elasticity.  Ideally wait until there is some virgin growth to work with before applying extensions.  If working with Afro hair that has been taken ‘bone straight’  it is imperative that the attachments are attached to regrowth.

Clients on medication that causes hair fall

The effects of prescription drugs on the hair are often not immediate; it may take up to a year for the effects to be obvious. If your client is on medication where excess hair fall is a possible side effect, it is better to avoid any extension service until she has finished her course.  If the client is on long-term medication and doesn’t seem to be suffering any type of hair loss proceed with caution.

Clients suffering alopecia or unusual hair fall

Clients can be tempted to add extensions to cover up this problem, extensions are likely to make the hair fall out quicker due to the extra weight on the roots so would only exacerbate the problem.

Clients who are receiving treatments for cancer or who have received treatment in the last 6 months

Cancer treatments including chemotherapy and associated medication can cause hair loss, as cancer treatment can be quite aggressive and often compromises the immune system. Again, applying extensions in this situation can actually speed up hair fall.  Wait until the patient is in recovery and hair growth has stabilised

Infestations such as head lice or nit eggs on the natural hair

Infestations such as head lice spread easily; wait until the infestation has cleared before applying extensions.

Hair Extension Contra-Indicators will be discussed in depth during your hair extension consultation
