Question the client on her lifestyle. It important you have a good idea of her routine, so you can determine a suitable extension hair type. Although thorough aftercare is given in full on day of application, basic aftercare advice on extension hair should be given to give the client an overall representation of the commitment she is making.
Establish her hair care routine, how she likes to wear her hair, styles she would like to experiment with in the future. Remember, this client will wear her extensions for months and it is extremely important you get a very good idea of what she does now and what she will want to do. Ask her to show you an image of the look she is hoping for, if this is unrealistic, be clear about what she can expect from her final look.
Show her your portfolio and talk her through the different hair types and service types, although the client may already have an idea of the extension style she hopes to achieve this will help give her a realistic idea of the final style. Check for scalp abrasions and unusual hair growth patterns, which will affect the final styling possibilities. Take fringes, double cowlicks, broken hair areas into consideration. Use the consultation documents to establish any problematic areas and to keep an eye on any worrisome areas. Often you will be covering up previous damage, use these forms to monitor recovery, your client will appreciate your vigilance.
Always show the client the colours you have decided on and allow her to verify she is happy with your choice.
Determining her hair thickness and final styling will help you work out appointment times. Impress upon the client the need to be prompt for her appointment. Always give your client a realistic completion time erring on the cautious side. This is a good point to ask if you may take before and after pictures for your portfolio.
